I had heard about Diamond Beach, Iceland many times, but no story or photograph could do justice. The wonder of seeing it in person is just incredibly unbelievable . Located on the southeastern coast of Iceland, adjacent to the famous Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon. This black sand beach earned its name from the sparkling icebergs that wash ashore, looking like glittering diamonds scattered across the coastline.
The drive to Diamond Beach is a journey in itself. Starting from Reykjavik, Iceland’s capital, the beach is about a five-hour drive along Route 1, which is also known as the Ring Road. The scenic journey takes you through otherworldly landscapes—endless fields of moss, snow-capped mountains, and awe-inspiring waterfalls. It felt like driving through a postcard! If you have the time, I recommend stopping by Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss. These two are the most iconic waterfalls in Iceland, which are along the way.
As I approached Diamond Beach, I could feel the temperature drop, and the crisp, cold air filled my lungs. I parked near Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon and, with eager steps, made my way toward the beach. The contrast of the shimmering blue ice chunks against the pitch-black volcanic sand was surreal. The “diamonds” on the beach come from the nearby Breiðamerkurjökull glacier, which calves icebergs into the Jökulsárlón Lagoon. The icebergs drift out to sea and eventually wash up on the shore, turning the beach into a dreamy, icy wonderland.
The Breathtaking View of Diamond Beach
As I stood on the beach, I was mesmerized by the sight of giant ice boulders sparkling in the Arctic sunlight. The black sand created a striking contrast with the white, blue, and clear icebergs, making them look like huge diamonds on the shore.

I spent hours walking up and down the shore, photographing the icebergs from different angles. Food and Cuisine: Where to Eat Near Diamond Beach
After soaking in the beauty of Diamond Beach, my appetite led me to discover some of the local culinary delights. While the beach itself is remote and doesn’t have many dining options, the nearest town is Höfn, about an hour’s drive east.Höfn is well-known for its delicious lobster, also called langoustine. This small town has several excellent restaurants where you can enjoy fresh seafood.
One of my favorite places to eat was Pakkhús, a charming restaurant located in an old building by the harbor in Höfn. Here, I treated myself to a delectable lobster feast. The lobster soup was rich and flavorful, and the grilled langoustine tails were tender and perfectly seasoned. Seafood lovers visiting Diamond Beach must make a pitstop in Höfn for the lobster—it’s a culinary experience you won’t forget.
For those in a hurry, there are also small cafés and guesthouses along the Ring Road where you can grab coffee, sandwiches, and pastries for a quicker meal on the go.. Hali CountryHotel, located about 12 kilometers from Jökulsárlón, has a cozy restaurant offering traditional Icelandic meals, including lamb stew and Arctic char.

Diamond Beach Iceland is located near Vatnajökull National Park, home to Europe’s largest glacier, Vatnajökull. One of the most popular hikes is to Svartifoss, a waterfall surrounded by dark lava columns that look like organ pipes. Walking inside a glacier cave is a surreal experience, with the blue ice surrounding you, glowing in the light.

While smaller and less crowded, it’s equally stunning and offers serene views of the glacier and the surrounding mountains. You can even take a zodiac boat tour here, which allows for more intimate encounters with the icebergs.

During this period, the icebergs are more plentiful, and there’s a higher chance of seeing the Northern Lights.
